What is Wellbeing?

Wellbeing [ noun ] – the state of being comfortable, healthy or happy – Oxford English Dictionary.

This can be achieved by following The Five Steps to Wellbeing.

We’ve heard a lot over the last few years about improving our Wellbeing, so what is it?

It is broken down into many contributing factors to create The Five Steps to Wellbeing, such as:

How are we feeling in the moment?

How are we coping with our daily life? and

What is achievable at the present time?

Good mental Wellbeing includes the presence of positive emotions and moods. Having contentment, happiness, satisfaction and purpose with life, fulfilment, and positivity.

Poor mental Wellbeing means you find it more difficult to cope with daily life. Having a lack of energy and enthusiasm to carry out simple daily tasks. You have negative emotions and thoughts. Feel more withdrawn from others, and may battle with depression and anxiety.

The Five Steps to Wellbeing

There is evidence to support that there are five simple steps you can take to improve your mental Wellbeing which include:

  1. Connect with other people.

Forming good relationships with others is important for your mental wellbeing. Checking in on friends and relatives, spending good quality time together. Seeing people in person where possible, try not to rely on text messages and social media!

  1. Be physically active.

Exercise is great for your physical health and fitness, as well as releasing those feel-good hormones, endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin. You don’t have to join a gym, going for a brisk walk which increases your heart rate, is a great starting point. Being out in nature is a bonus too.

  1. Learn new skills.

A great way to keep your brain active and engaged. Do a bit of DIY or try a new hobby. There are lots of ways to get help to learn, either finding online or in person classes.

  1. Give to others.

Unconditional gifts of items or time can make you feel on top of the world and boosts your feelings of purpose. It could be as simple as saying thank you or holding a door open for someone else.

  1. Pay attention to the present moment, be mindful.

Practicing Mindfulness is good practice to check in with yourself. You could start by doing some grounding, a technique which makes you aware of your surroundings and how you are feeling. You don’t have to be outside, this technique can be used at any time, especially when feeling anxious or overwhelm setting in. Watch my video to explain more.
