Finding it Difficult to Confront things?

As one client said, “As a male I found it difficult to confront things,” which is a stigma surrounding Men’s Mental Health we need to break.
My Story
Many years ago, my ex-husband had a tremendous amount of work stress which resulted in him turning to alcohol to cope. The long hours, the travel, and missing out on family life, all took its toll. Just before the Christmas break, he was near breaking point, one deal fell out of bed, and it crashed him down.
Christmas was unbearable, drinking to ‘cope’ but ‘it was okay it’s party time, right’?
The day he went back to work in the New Year, he called me after an hour in, and asked me to make him a doctor’s appointment. He was clinically depressed.
Although he underwent counselling and took medication to help, he took a long time to recover. His coping mechanism is to drink, one of the failings of our marriage.
At the time he couldn’t cope with the stigma of needing Mental Health Support and thought he could cope and battle through it. A story told so many times.
I’m pleased to say now many years on, and with the support of his son, he is much more mentally healthy, openly sharing his story to help break the stigma.
Trevor came to me as he was using alcohol to sleep and cope. We worked over zoom as he’s not local which worked really well. “I can now function again, possibly better than I’ve been for years and I’m able to enjoy life to the full whilst appreciating everything around me.”
Craig had ongoing issues with self-confidence, low self-esteem and anxiety at both a personal and professional level. “There has been a massive improvement in my mental health and happiness since beginning the sessions, this has led to, better performance and concentration at work, a far better sleep pattern and importantly for me, the ability to enjoy rest and relaxation”.
Why the stigma on Men’s Mental Health?
Unfortunately, society places stereotypes and expectations onto genders. Both damaging to our Mental Health.
Men are often looked upon to be the breadwinner, to be strong, dominant and in control. This makes it incredibly hard for men to recognise when they aren’t functioning as they should. They struggle to open up and reach out for Support.
Men are more likely to use harmful coping approaches, such as alcohol and drugs.
When Men aren’t coping, they can become angry and irritable, less in control, take higher risks and become aggressive.
The Mental Health Foundation has some great information on Men’s Mental Health Support.
Men’s Health Awareness
There are several awareness days throughout the year. They educate and raise awareness to men and boys surrounding Men’s Health and let them know it is okay to not be okay.

Ken turned to me for help due to a medical condition, resulting in lack of sleep and suffering with high anxiety. “Having never been to a therapist before, I turned to Jo in desperate need of help when I was suffering from depression and anxiety due to a medical condition, lack of sleep and the feeling that I could not get my life back in control. Her friendly manner made it easy for me to communicate with her. The sessions, which I found calming, got me back in control of my thoughts and actions. I now have a more positive outlook on my life and feel that I am back in control. I have nothing but sincere gratitude for the help Jo gave me.”

Sometimes Hypnotherapy sessions can have some surprising life changing outcomes.
Gavin came to me for help with fear of flying, however the sessions unlocked other revelations about his life. “I had no prior experience of hypnotherapy so really didn’t know what to expect. Following a number of background questions relating to my personal life, work, life, etc, it became very apparent I was a very frustrated, angry person. We delved into the reasons why and it quickly became apparent my work was the issue, I made a very big decision to resign, and I’ve never felt better!! On this occasion the hypnotherapy did not help me fly again but it has helped me so much in other ways I couldn’t have imagined.”
