How to Build Healthy Habits for Long-Term Success

There has been a rapid rise in 2025 in the number of people using GLP-1 medications for weight loss.

In this blog, I explain how I support your weight loss journey on GLP-1s (such as Ozempic®, Wegovy®, and Mounjaro®), and how to build healthy habits for long-term success beyond the injections.

Obesity is a major public health issue both in England and globally, according to the World Health Organisation. In the UK, NHS England reported in 2022 that 29% of adults were living with obesity, and 64% were either overweight or living with obesity. Carrying excess weight strains the body and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, neurological conditions, chronic respiratory disease, and digestive disorders.

While countless diets focus only on food intake, GLP-1 medications provide a new approach, helping people lose weight with a weekly injection. Semaglutide (Ozempic®, Wegovy®) and Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) reduce appetite and support meaningful, lasting change.

However, the true transformation lies in the routines and mindset shifts you develop along the way. My role is to guide and support you so that you emerge with healthier habits, stronger self-control, and confidence to sustain your results long after treatment. Subtle guidance through tools such as my Butterfly Program for Transformation and Growth can help you embed lasting habits and shift mindset patterns effectively.

What Are GLP-1 Medications and How Do They Work?

GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) is a hormone naturally produced in the small intestine. It regulates blood sugar, digestion, and appetite. GLP-1 stimulates the pancreas to release insulin, helping cells absorb glucose, while suppressing glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar. By balancing insulin and glucagon, GLP-1 keeps blood sugar steady after eating.

GLP-1 receptor agonists mimic this natural hormone. Widely used medications include:

  • Semaglutide – Ozempic® (injectable), Rybelsus® (oral), Wegovy® (injectable)
  • Tirzepatide – Mounjaro® (injectable) and Zepbound® (injectable)

These medications act on the gut and brain to slow gastric emptying, reduce hunger, and improve satiety, supporting both weight management and blood sugar control.

By slowing stomach emptying and influencing brain centres, GLP-1s help people feel fuller for longer, reducing overall food intake. Hormonal signals like leptin, often disrupted in obesity, gradually normalise with weight loss. This combination supports both appetite regulation and long-term success on GLP-1 medications.

From Diabetes Treatment to Weight Loss Breakthrough

GLP-1’s role in glucose regulation was discovered in the 1980s, with the first drugs for type 2 diabetes appearing in 2005.

In 2017, Semaglutide (Ozempic®) was FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes. Researchers noticed consistent weight loss as a side effect, which led to the 2021 approval of Wegovy® specifically for weight management.

In 2022, Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®), a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist, offered enhanced efficacy.

By June 2025, the NHS began rolling out Mounjaro® via GPs in England, making this breakthrough more widely accessible.

What began as a treatment for diabetes has now become a game-changer in the fight against obesity, helping clients lose weight safely while supporting overall health.

The Benefits of GLP-1 Medications for Weight Management

Appetite and Satiety

GLP-1 medications slow digestion, leading to steadier blood sugar and a feeling of fullness that helps reduce overeating and snacking. Many people notice a natural shift toward lighter foods like fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, while cravings for sugary or fatty foods diminish.

They also act on the gut–brain axis, calming reward pathways that often drive emotional eating. Eating becomes more about nourishment than comfort. Clinical studies show weight reductions of 15–25% or more of initial body weight, boosting motivation and reinforcing long-term success.

Additional Health Benefits

Beyond weight loss, GLP-1 medications support overall wellbeing:

  • Reduce risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death by up to 20%
  • Ozempic® reduces risk of kidney disease in people with type 2 diabetes
  • Mounjaro® approved for obstructive sleep apnoea (2024)
  • Lower inflammation and fat stores, protecting cellular health

Combined with healthy routines and mindset work, GLP-1s are powerful tools for a holistic approach to weight management.

Common Side Effects to Be Aware Of

GLP-1 medications can cause side effects, particularly in the first few weeks:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating
  • Headaches, fatigue, occasional mood changes
  • Rapid weight loss effects: sagging skin, “Ozempic Face,” hair shedding

Most side effects are temporary and improve as your body adjusts.

Healthy meal supporting weight loss on GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and MounjaroHydration, balanced nutrition, and gentle movement help reduce digestive discomfort and maintain muscle and bone health. Long-term use is often needed to maintain results, as stopping medication can lead to weight regain.

Sustainable change requires more than medication. Building healthy routines, including regular exercise and mindful eating, is essential.

Because these drugs reduce calorie intake, the body draws on fat stores. However, may also break down some muscle and bone tissue without adequate resistance training and nutrition.

Support and lifestyle changes help you feel well, preserve strength, and ensure your transformation is not only successful but lasting.

How Hypnotherapy Supports Mindset Change

Even as GLP-1 medications reduce appetite, old emotional triggers and self-sabotaging behaviours can persist. Many people find that, even as hunger fades, old emotional triggers, cravings, or self-sabotaging behaviours can remain. This is why people get caught in the ‘yo-yo diet’ trap.

Hypnotherapy session for building confidence and healthy habits while on GLP-1 weight loss medicationHypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind to gently rewire unhelpful patterns. Giving clients the tools to respond calmly to stress, boredom, or emotional triggers without turning to food. Hypnotherapy has helped many people through weight management, without the need for GLP-1 medication.

Through my Butterfly Program, incorporating the Mind Reboot Program, we combine hypnosis, NLP, and neuroscience to support habit change and mindset transformation safely and effectively.

“Clinicians should view hypnosis as a promising treatment option for obesity,”

“…the average participant receiving some form of hypnosis lost more weight than about 94% of control participants at the end of treatment…”
